Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
