The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
